Week 2: Advantages and Disadvantages of CALL
In my opinion, there are more advantages of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) compared to the disadvantages. Firstly, the traditional language learning is considered as monotonous and students are used to it that its no longer considered as fun or interesting. Technology is something that can certainly attract students as it is not commonly used and it is versatile in the sense that it can be adapted to cater to many lessons in class. Not only that, computer can give instant feedback and help students become aware of his misconception at the very first stage. Brown (1997) listed the advantages of CALL as giving immediate feedback, allowing students at their own pace, and causing less frustration among students.
In terms of its disadvantages, the obvious one I could think of is teachers who are not trained enough to utilize technology in class. Being computer-savvy is necessary for both teachers and students so that they can benefit the most from it. The lack of facilities in school can be the reason that hinders CALL from being successful in school. Slow internet and lack of computers can be a 'turn off' factors that may demotivate a teacher from using CALL in classroom.
